Alexandr Wang

Alexandr Wang grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico, a place he later described as "the birthplace of the atomic bomb" in an essay arguing that AI would decide the next era of warfare. In 2016, at 19, he left MIT to co-found Scale AI through Y Combinator. Scale began by labeling camera and lidar data for self-driving car companies, then became a main supplier of the human-written examples and ratings that AI labs use to fine-tune language models, along with defense contracts for the Pentagon. In January 2025 Wang bought a full-page advertisement in the Washington Post addressed to the incoming president: "Dear President Trump, America must win the AI war."

In June 2025 Meta invested 14.3 billion dollars for roughly half of Scale, valuing it at more than 29 billion dollars, and Wang left the chief executive job to become Meta's first chief AI officer, keeping a seat on Scale's board. Mark Zuckerberg's memo of 30 June put him in charge of Meta Superintelligence Labs, covering FAIR, product teams and a new frontier-model group, TBD Lab, which Wang ran directly. In October 2025 he announced about 600 job cuts across Meta's AI units, including FAIR, while TBD Lab was spared.

The lab's first model, Muse Spark, was released on 8 April 2026 without open weights, which Meta called "the first product of a ground-up overhaul of our AI efforts." In June 2026 CNBC reported pressure on Wang and Nat Friedman to turn the model into revenue, and that Zuckerberg could give Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth a larger AI role; Wang dismissed reports of internal conflict.
